Background of the study
Healthy dietary habits are crucial for preventing lifestyle-related diseases and ensuring overall well-being. In Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, Kebbi State, adult literacy programs are being leveraged as platforms to promote nutritional awareness and encourage healthy eating practices among adults. These programs integrate nutritional education into literacy curricula, aiming to empower individuals with the knowledge to make informed dietary choices. By enhancing basic literacy skills, participants are better able to access, understand, and apply nutritional information, which in turn contributes to improved public health outcomes (Ibrahim, 2023).

The incorporation of dietary education into adult literacy programs is especially important in communities where traditional diets and limited access to health information often result in suboptimal nutritional practices. Literacy initiatives in Birnin Kebbi have been tailored to address local dietary challenges by including modules on balanced nutrition, food safety, and the prevention of nutrition-related diseases. Through interactive sessions, community workshops, and the distribution of educational materials, these programs strive to create a culture of health awareness. Moreover, they provide practical guidance on preparing nutritious meals using locally available ingredients, thereby enhancing both health literacy and food security (Umar, 2024).

In recent years, public health authorities and non-governmental organizations have collaborated with educational institutions to strengthen the link between literacy and nutrition. These collaborations have resulted in innovative curriculum designs that address the unique dietary needs of the community. Despite these efforts, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited reach of the programs, and resistance to changing traditional dietary habits persist. The effectiveness of these literacy-based nutritional interventions is an area that warrants comprehensive evaluation. This study aims to critically assess how well these programs are fostering healthy dietary habits among adults in Birnin Kebbi and to identify strategies for enhancing their impact (Garba, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Notwithstanding the integration of nutritional education into adult literacy programs in Birnin Kebbi, several challenges hinder the full realization of their potential in promoting healthy dietary habits. One significant problem is the misalignment between the educational content and the community’s traditional dietary practices. Many adults find it difficult to reconcile modern nutritional guidelines with longstanding cultural food preferences, leading to resistance against adopting healthier eating practices (Sani, 2023). Additionally, the literacy programs often suffer from inadequate funding and logistical challenges, which result in limited distribution of updated nutritional information and suboptimal program delivery.

Furthermore, the lack of specialized training for facilitators in nutritional education undermines the quality of instruction, causing gaps in knowledge transfer. The absence of continuous monitoring and evaluation mechanisms also makes it difficult to assess the long-term impact of these interventions on the community’s dietary habits. Consequently, despite the presence of well-intentioned programs, there remains a significant gap between the theoretical nutritional knowledge imparted and its practical application in daily life. These issues are compounded by broader socio-economic factors that restrict access to a variety of healthy food options, thereby perpetuating unhealthy dietary patterns. This study, therefore, seeks to explore the challenges and limitations of integrating nutritional education into adult literacy programs and to provide recommendations for bridging the gap between education and practice, ultimately improving the overall health outcomes of the community in Birnin Kebbi (Lawal, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the impact of literacy-based nutritional education on healthy dietary habits.

  2. To identify barriers to the adoption of healthy eating practices among adults.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing the integration of nutritional education in literacy programs.

Research questions

  1. How effective are literacy programs in promoting healthy dietary habits in Birnin Kebbi?

  2. What cultural and economic barriers hinder the adoption of healthy eating practices?

  3. What improvements can be made to enhance the impact of nutritional education within literacy programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Literacy-based nutritional education significantly improves healthy dietary practices.

  2. Cultural resistance and economic constraints adversely affect the adoption of healthy eating habits.

  3. Tailored nutritional interventions within literacy programs lead to improved health outcomes.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the role of adult literacy programs in promoting healthy dietary habits in Birnin Kebbi. By critically assessing program effectiveness and identifying key challenges, the research will offer valuable recommendations for improving nutritional education. The outcomes are expected to inform public health policy and contribute to the development of more effective community-based interventions that enhance health literacy and foster long-term well-being (Abubakar, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the evaluation of adult literacy programs that integrate nutritional education to promote healthy dietary habits in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, Kebbi State. It focuses exclusively on program content, delivery, and participant outcomes within this specific geographic area.

Definitions of terms
